Awaken to the sound and polite fury that is Tokyo downtown in full commute mode. The trains, running like veins and arteries through the heart of the city, thunder both above and below ground. After breakfast, we head out into the mega-city that never sleeps.
Our first visit will be to the famous Akihabara Electric Town, full of lights, electronics, and pop cultural galore. Whether or not you are a fan of Japanese animation and comic book characters, it is amazing that such a place exists to celebrate and promote the imagination of a culture that has no problem with fantasy and reality existing side-by-side. Following the lighter “pop culture” of modernity, we take some time to also take a deep look into the ancient history and artifacts that have been preserved through the ages at the Tokyo National Museum.
We continue to explore and discover Tokyo and ascend to the pinnacle of the city, the Tokyo Sky Tree, so that we can take in the massive breadth of the concrete and steel mega-city that is Tokyo. It looks like it goes on forever and on a very clear day you may also see some mountains off in the distance. From the lofty heights of the Sky Tree, we head down to the streets again to the Sensoji Temple, a marvelous iconic temple of the modern capital that still has that good old Edo atmosphere. It is a must-see spot when visiting Tokyo.
With the Kaminarimon (the Thunder Gate) and the five-storied pagoda, as well as the busy side streets and specialty shops of Nakamise-dori street, there’s so much to see and do. Definitely keep your camera ready at all times!
Enjoy the rest of the afternoon exploring the area, as well as the Nakamise Shopping Street is the most beautiful shopping street where Japanese confection, sweets, ice cream, rice crackers, street foods, and authentic Japanese foods can be sampled and enjoyed.
The Japanese word, nakamise, has a deep meaning. “Naka” means “inside,” and “mise” means “see.” So, “Nakamise” means “which can be seen inside from outside.”
Meals Included: Breakfast and Lunch
Day 12: Saturday, November 2, 2024
Today is a day for early risers. We are off to the famous Tsukiji Outer Fish Market. Come and see where massive tuna and all sorts of seafood is auctioned and purchased for top restaurants in the city. You can get the freshest sea food of your life here! There are cafes and restaurants to relax and enjoy the bounties of the sea. There are also shops that sell specific cooking tools that are unique for Japanese cuisine and for aspiring chefs and cooks. Get ready for a feast at all levels! Here’s another great article about the market.
Following the market, we make our way to some high-cultured locations. The first is the Nezu Museum, and austere beautiful museum with an incredible collection of the tools of tea, the aesthetics of the tea ceremony, and holy iconic statues and artifacts connected to Japanese Buddhism. There is also a wonderful garden to relax and reflect upon the morning.
We then visit the famous Meiji Jingu Shrine, a massive complex of ancient forest, Shinto Shrines, and the site of auspicious ceremonies and celebration. This is one of the great Shinto power spots of the nation, and a walk through its ancient pathways is transcendent and beautiful.
Later in the day, we visit the heart of Japan’s youth culture – the Shibuya Crossing where thousands upon thousands of people spill across the intersection in all directions in the center of the city. Shibuya is famous for its hundreds upon hundreds of stacked cafes, shops, bars, and restaurants. We enjoy the evening here with great food and drink while waves of people spill out all over downtown.
